Swine Enteric Coronaviruses
Severe outbreaks of enteric coronaviruses, characterized by acute and rapidly spreading diarrhea, are threatening swine operations worldwide. In the U.S. alone, porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) has caused losses of more than 8 million pigs. The clinical presentation of PEDV is indistinguishable from that of transmissible gastroenteritis virus (TGEV) and porcine deltacoronavirus (PDCoV), two other swine enteric coronaviruses of great concern.
Recommended actions include:
- Detection and differentiation of disease agents
- Robust biosecurity programs to minimize transmission
- Monitoring of controlled exposure programs
- Monitoring of safe (nonshedding) animal movement
