In the evolving landscape of swine management, continuous efforts are made to enhance productivity and promote the well-being of piglets. This study delves into the effects of administering Tonisity Px in the farrowing house, focusing on key parameters such as weaning weight, the proportion of full-value pigs at weaning and pre-weaning mortality.

Study Population and Feeding Plan:

Enrollment involved the random allocation of litters to either the Control or Tonisity Px (TPX) groups, organised by row of pens within a shared farrowing room. Weaning age ranged between 19 and 23 days. Cross-fostering for litter balancing occurred within the treatment group, typically within the first 24 hours post-farrowing. Pigs deemed visually weak were humanely euthanised at birth.

Study Feed Plan:

The TPX piglets were administered a carefully structured feeding plan:

  • 500 ml/litter/day of Tonisity Px 3% solution in round feeding pans for seven days, between days two and eight of life
  • For three days pre-weaning, TPX was mixed with creep feed
  • Tonisity Px was reconstituted using sterilised tap water to ensure optimal water quality

Control piglets did not receive any supplementation. Both groups were provided with dry creep feed from day 11 to weaning, spread onto the mats within the pens.

The implementation of the Tonisity Px feeding plan yielded remarkable results, including:

Weaning Weight: TPX piglets exhibited a 630 g increase at weaning compared to the control group, with an average weaning age of approximately 21 days (Control 6.07 kg; TPX 6.70 kg;

P<0.001). Improved weaning weight is the classic and widely used metric used to assess farrowing house performance. Using the full pre-weaning Tonisity Px protocol significantly improved pre-weaning weight gain in this study. This is in line with other China studies (N=7,783 pigs) and with studies performed elsewhere in the world.

Furthermore, weight improved throughout the entire population. Therefore, Tonisity Px is for all pigs, not only for the smallest of the litter.

From previous studies, we expect any weight advantage at weaning to be amplified by at least four times and up to 10 times to finish, thus resulting in 2.5-6.3 kg extra finishing weight or approximately 3-7 fewer days to finishing.

Average Daily Gain: TPX piglets demonstrated a 30 g/d extra average daily gain from birth to weaning, surpassing the control group (Control 218 g/d; TPX 248 g/d; P<0.001).

Proportion of Full-Value Pigs: The Tonisity Px group showed a 13% increase in the proportion of full-value pigs at weaning, resulting from a substantial 57% reduction in fall-behinds (Control 81.2%; TPX 91.9%; P=0.01). This study, along with our other data, clearly shows that these extra piglets are not just “small piglets that survived.”

Improvement in Weight Category: TPX piglets exhibited a remarkable 135% increase in the number of pigs improving in weight category from birth to weaning (Control 9.7%; TPX 22.8%; P=0.004).

Reduction in Weight Category Decline: There was a 62% decrease in TPX pigs declining in weight category from birth to weaning compared to the control group (Control 26.2%; TPX 10.0%; P=0.0007).

Conclusion

Tonisity Px can elevate your operation's economic viability by achieving remarkable weaning weights, boosting daily gains, and significantly reducing pre-weaning mortality. Tonisity’s innovative solution not only enhances bottom lines but also prioritises the well-being and health of piglets.
