During the 27th International Pig Veterinary Society Congress (IPVS) and the 15th European Symposium of Porcine Health Management (ESPHM) held jointly June 4-7, 2024 in Leipzig (Germany), 333 interviewed the chairman of the IPVS 2026 Committee, Professor Dr. Nguyen Tat Toan.

Why do you think that Vietnam is the place to host the next IPVS? Why Ho Chi Minh?

  • Agriculture-oriented country
  • Top 6th pork producer in the world with a total population of over 28 million pig heads
  • One of the World's top pork consumption countries
  • Pig production is of great importance and is evenly distributed in all regions of Vietnam.
  • This will be the first time the IPVS congress is hosted in Vietnam.

Ho Chi Minh City is the place that fulfills all the criteria for organizing this congress. Ho Chi Minh City is the largest and most vibrant city in Vietnam. It is a cultural and economic hub that attracts millions of visitors every year. From here, you can travel all over the country of Vietnam.

What are the main challenges for the industry in Southeast Asia? Do you plan to cover them in IPVS?

All of us have known about the evolution of pig farming from back yard to industrial scale to feed the large population. The number of pigs worldwide is increasing in which Asia is the most dense area. This development nowadays is facing many global issues such as poverty, malnutrition, political issues, and global warming. We hope that the latest scientific topics about swine will be reported and discussed during the congress. Besides, many cutting-edge achievements for pig health and production will be introduced and exhibited at the congress. Many hot topics will be discussed by well-known pig researchers and practitioners.

  •  Emerging infectious diseases
  • Combating African swine fever
  • IoT and AI in swine health and production
  • Swine production improvement for sustainable global environment
  • Advanced technology for  swine health and production
  • Animal welfare
  • AMR
  • Others

Any message you would like to transmit?

The IPVS 2026 title is “Caring for the Pig Achieving a Healthy & Sustainable Global Environment”. So we need to be achieving healthy pigs and sustainable development of pig production globally for the long term. We look forward to welcoming you in 2026 in Vietnam.
