African Swine Fever: Suspected Case Emerges in Kwahu West

Authorities in the Kwahu West Municipality are investigating a suspected outbreak of African Swine Fever (ASF) following reports of several pig deaths by local farmers. Samples from affected livestock have been sent to the laboratory for confirmation.

According to the Ghana Health Service, the situation is being closely monitored, with necessary actions to follow based on the test results. African Swine Fever is a highly contagious viral disease that spreads through direct contact with infected pigs, contaminated feed, and vectors like ticks and flies. Though not harmful to humans, the disease is deadly to pigs, often causing death within a week and affecting piglets and pregnant sows.

The sub-region remains vulnerable to ASF, with previous outbreaks recorded in places like Jaman North District in 2021, where over 200 pigs were lost. In 2023, a farmer in Kwahu Akwaboa also reported significant losses due to the disease.

Veterinary officials urge farmers to adhere strictly to biosecurity measures, including disinfection, quarantining affected animals, and banning the transport of pigs from infected areas.
