The confirmation of a second case of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) in Hungary, on a dairy cattle farm with over 3,000 head, has led Hungarian authorities to establish a surveillance zone that extends into Austrian territory.
In light of this uncertain situation, Austrian authorities have decided to expand the surveillance zone within Austria. In this zone, farms with susceptible animals are inspected by the authorities, and random samples are taken from the animals.
The last outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in Austria occurred in 1981.
