Colostrum

Colostrum is the first milk produced by the sow after labour, and it is a kind of concentrated milk. It contains more energy and nutrients than normal milk and it also contains more defenses against diseases. Due to these reasons, it is a vitally important food for the survival of the newborn piglets, because it satisfies two of the most important defficiencies of pigs when they are born (energy and defenses). Normally, colostrum is only secreted by the teats during the first day of lactation, so, as time goes by, its composition changes towards the composition of normal milk.
