Vomitoxicosis

Vomitoxin is a mycotoxin that causes reduced feed intake, resulting in slow growth.

Alternative names: Micotoxins, vomitoxin, DON, Deoxynivalenol, Fusarium

Information

Vomitoxin causes vomiting and reduced feed intake. Because the animal reduces its intake, intoxication in pigs is limited, but it causes reduced production.

Symptoms

Sows, nursery and fattening

  • Vomiting.
  • Go off feed.
  • Slow growth.

Causes / Contributing Factors

  • Crops affected by high humidity levels.

Diagnosis

  • It is very difficult to make a diagnosis because sometimes there is a low concentration of DON and several other mycotoxins present in the feed.

Control/Prevention

  • Removal of suspected feed.
  • Use absorptive products in feed.
