Possible causes: Zearalenone toxicosis
Tumefaction of the vulva is a physiological response to estrogens, it occurs normally, for example, during the estrous. But occasionally this change can be a consequence of a pathological process. In this piglet, this lesion was due to exposure to mycotoxins. These may have estrogenic effect, most commonly zearalenone, produced by different Fusarium species. Other causes in sows include cystic follicular disease or ovarian neoplasia (granulosa cell tumors).
