Umbilical hernia

Where:

Possible causes: Hernias

The umbilical hernia occurs when the muscles in the area around the umbilical cord are too weak; this causes the umbilical opening not to close properly and intestines protrude through the intestinal wall

The process is benign and one potential impact is the occasional incarceration of bowel loops and consequent death of the animal, or lower weight gain.

These animals should be dressed especially carefully in the slaughterhouse to avoid cutting the intestines inserted in the hernial ring and the subsequent contamination of the carcass.
