Larvae of Trichinella spiralis are found in the most active striated muscles with high concentration of oxygen, such as the pillars of the diaphragm, the heart, the masseter muscle or the tongue; but if the infestation is severe, they may appear in other muscles and even the lungs or the brain.
The larvae in the image (shown under the trichinoscope) have been extracted from the pillars of the diaphragm by artificial digestion.
They belong to an adult animal raised in extensive farming for domestic consumption.
