Swine dysentery is produced by Brachyspira hyodysenteriae infection. This bacterium produces a severe mucous and ulcerative colitis. The inflammation and edema of the colon and rectum can be so severe that may produce tenesmus and, consequently, rectal prolapse. However, this lesion can be also a consequence of other diseases such as parasitosis, changes in diet, pregnancy, physical injuries and genetic factors.
