The presence of these necrotic areas on the mucosal surface is one of the four pathological forms of Lawsonia intracellularis infection, known as necrotic enteritis. Other pathological presentations produced by this bacterium are: intestinal adenomatosis, regional ileitis and proliferative hemorrhagic enteropathy. All these lesions are usually included in the term Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy (PPE).
