Liver emphysema - Atlas of swine pathology

Liver emphysema

Where:

Possible causes: Clostridium novyi

Lesion due to clostridiosis. Rapid postmortem decomposition of the animal and bloody liquid coming out the nostrils is observed. There are no specific clinical signs. It occurs most often when other diseases are present, or it is sometimes associated with alterations in feed consumption (hoppers that become empty: high temperatures that cause animals to eat only during the few hours with lower temperatures). Differential diagnosis should consider emphysema due to postmortem alterations; if excessive time passes between death and necropsy it can be a typical postmortem lesion without clinical significance.
