A large bunch of colourless air-filled vesicles are observed where the small intestine joins the mesentery.
It produces no symptoms in the live animal, and no aetiologic agent has been named as the causative agent, so it does not appear to be contagious for pigs or men. Lesions have been found post-mortem in 100-kg pigs. It is a rare, unsightly slaughterhouse finding, so the intestine is removed from consumption.
