This lesion corresponds to interstitial pneumonia. The lungs are not collapsed and there is a multifocal to diffuse, lobular pattern of reddening. The lungs are heavier than normal and have a rubbery texture. This lesion is suggestive of viral etiology. This case was caused by PRRSV infection. However, other respiratory viral infectious agents such as PCV2, Swine influenza virus, Aujeszky's disease virus, and in some cases septicemias produced by Salmonella cholerasuis, can also produce interstitial pneumonia in pigs.
