Hyperplastic and hyperkeratotic dermatitis

This lesion corresponds to hyperplastic and hyperkeratotic dermatitis. This is usually associated with sarcoptic mange (Sarcoptes scabiei). Lesions begin on the external ears, head, and neck and can become generalized. Early lesions consist of macules, papules, crusts and excoriations, while chronic lesions are scaly, lichenified and hairless. Differential diagnosis includes infection by Staphylococcus hyicus (exudative epidermitis) that usually affects piglets of 5-35 days of age.
