These inflammatory changes in the intestines of a fattening pig were caused by Lawsonia intracellularis. The most common changes begin in the ileum, then in the jejunum, cecum and colon. Changed sections of the intestines are dilated and distended, the submucosa is swollen, sometimes with petechiae. Inside the intestines, fresh blood or fibrin clots can be found. In this severe case with serious hemorrhagic changes the diagnosis was made with PCR for the detection of Lawsonia intracellularis. PCR for the detection of Brachyspira hyodysenteriae gave negative result.
