Femur fracture detected in a fattener at slaughter.
The appearance of the bleeding around the broken bone can tell us whether the fracture was pre- or post-mortem. In this case, the great amount of blood and its dark colour indicate that it was an ante-mortem process.
The most frequent causes of these injuries are accidents when loading the animals prior to their transport to the slaughterhouse, or an inadequate level of Ca / P in the diet, although they may also be due to inadequate stunning before slaughter.
