This is a splenic torsion. There are not usually clinical signs because the animal is found dead with a distended abdomen.Torsions probably are among the most significant causes of death in breeding stock. Torsions are often found in older sows. Although affected sows are usually pregnant, sows may die at any stage of the reproductive cycle. Rough movements and manipulations, noise and excitement among sows have been incriminated in torsion of abdominal organs. Feeding sows once a day or every other day might be an important risk factor. This feeding method requires sows to ingest large quantities of feed and water rapidly.
