This lesion corresponds to an abscess, which is a nodular focus of purulent and necrotic material surrounded by a fibrous capsule. Abscesses in whatever location are caused by bacterial infections. In this case, this abscess is located in the brain stem, probably as a consequence of an extension of a bacterial infection from an internal otitis.
