There is massive bleeding into the small intestine. Its common name is bloody gut and this is common in 60-90kg pigs and gilts. Proliferative Haemorrhagic Enteropathy is characterized by widespread degeneration and desquamation of enterocytes with severe congestion of mucosal vasculature and hemorrhage from capillary beds.  Mucosal thickening may not be as marked as in traditional PPE.  The trigger for hemorrhagic crisis is not known.

Proliferative Haemorrhagic Enteropathy is the lesser common form of the Porcine Proliferative Enteropathy (Ileitis).
