Rwanda’s pig farming industry has recorded significant progress with the launch of two modern slaughterhouses by Ntarama Pigs Farm Ltd and KIME Ltd, marking a major milestone in the sector’s development. The new facilities, located in Bugesera and Rusizi districts, are expected to greatly enhance pork processing capacity and hygiene standards in the country.

Ntarama’s facility can process up to 50 pigs daily, while KIME Ltd’s state-of-the-art slaughterhouse boasts a capacity of 200 pigs per day—the highest in Rwanda. These developments provide essential infrastructure for local pig farmers, offering more efficient slaughtering services and reliable market access.

The projects were made possible through the Belgium-funded PRISM-Enabel initiative under the Access to Technology program. Through the Open Calls programme by the National Industrial Research and Development Agency (NIRDA), both companies acquired the advanced equipment with 50% grant support and a 50% zero-interest loan. This financing model has empowered the operators to increase their production capacity and meet the growing national demand for high-quality pork products.

These achievements reflect Rwanda’s broader efforts to modernize and enhance the competitiveness of its agricultural sector. In total, 11 private agribusinesses across poultry, pig farming, and animal feed value chains have benefited from similar technology-driven support, helping to improve quality, productivity, and market reach.

With continued backing from NIRDA and Enabel, Rwanda is well on its way to building a more sustainable and profitable pig farming value chain that meets food safety standards for both domestic and regional m
