Lachlan Pearson is a consultant of pig and poultry producers for the international consultancy group Scolexia Pty Ltd in Australia, while also working on several research/biosecurity projects looking at diseases of intensive livestock. One aspect I enjoy about working on the Black Soldier Project for Western Australia University and Australian Pork Ltd is I can utilise my qualifications in food and medical microbiology and veterinary science, while my PhD in cell biology helps me to imagine endless theoretical possibilities of using insects and improvements and discoveries which have yet to be made. Even if some hurdles are too great to overcome from an applied practical or regulatory perspective, I think studying hygienic risks of using Black Soldier Flies is a great opportunity to better understand pathogen epidemiology and how pathogens such as Salmonella are transmitted through the food-feed chain.
